about

This project is the first in a series of beat compilations using beats made on the Akai S20 sampler. These beats were made using all samples, mostly from my vinyl collection, from 1998-2000.
I bought my AKAI s20 after being introduced to it by a local gearhead/producer in my hometown of Iowa City IA. After the passing of my grandmother, Betty Wickham, I was given a $500 inheritance, with which I ordered my own S20. I also inherited her record collection and you can hear some of the samples I used from those records on songs like "100 Plus," and "Here We Go."
Other songs I have released over past projects have used this machine including, "Doo-Doo," "Still Reignin" and "Blue Reign," to name a few.
After producing most of my beats using SoundEdit Pro or my Tascam PortaStudio (4-track recorder), this little machine took me to different places in my production. The 4 track sequencer was similar in workflow to my 4-track tape recorder, but allowed me to get cleaner and more interesting ways of looping. The limitations of the memory storage using floppy discs was sometimes frustrating, but as with everything I do in hip-hop, I used what I had and figured out a way to make it do something cool. The rough edits and imprecise methods are the things that make these beats interesting to me, especially the limitations of memory that only allow for a certain number of layers before dropping out tracks, as well as the resample function making the drums extra crunchy. I hope you enjoy this slice of Hip-Hop and look forward to volumes 2 and 3 coming soon.
